Using Western E-mail Accounts

In order to use your "westernhighschool.org" e-mail account you must first request it, so the account can be set up for you. You can drop Mr. Tomlinson a note or speak with him in person. Once the account is set up you may use it in two different ways: as a web mail account and as a standard "POP" account.

If you just thought to yourself, "Huh? Come again?" then I recommend you use the "Web Mail" method. Just follow the directions below under the heading, "Using your Western E-mail account via Web Mail."

If you are know what a POP account is and want to use yours this way, or want to find out about the difference between the two methods, look at the page, "Using Western E-Mail Accounts - POP Mail."

Using your Western E-mail account via Web Mail.

  1. Run your web browser and connect to the Internet. At school, the lab computers are directly connected to the Internet at all times, so you just need to double-click on the Safari or Internet Explorer icon. Type Command-L (hold down the key with the apple on it, next to the space bar, and type the letter L). Enter the address, "westernhighschool.org:2095" (without the quotation marks):
    Open Location
  2. Hit the Return key or click the "Open" button. You will see the following screen:
    Enter Name and Password
  3. Enter your e-mail address as it was given to you, for example: tomlinson@westernhighschool.org. Be sure to enter this in ALL LOWER CASE letters, or it may not work. Your password is the same as your Western network password. Here is how it should look:
    Name, Password Example
  4. When you have entered your user name and password, click on the "OK" button. You should see a screen that looks like this:
    Mail Reader Choices
  5. Currently, you have three mail interfaces from which to choose. The instructions that follow are for Neomail. If you feel confident that you know how to manage a webmail account without further guidance, then I recommend Horde, but you can use either Neomail, Horde or SquirrelMail. For assistance in setting up Neomail, read on.
  6. Click on the "Neomail" icon. If this is the first time you have logged in to your Web Mail account, you will see the following screen:
    Welcome to Neomail
Now would be a good time to choose "Bookmarks > Add Bookmark" from the menu bar (in Safari) or "Favorites > Add Page to Favorites" (in Internet Explorer) so that you do not have to type the address of this page in the future; you can just choose the page from your Bookmarks or Favorites list.
  7. Click "Continue" and you will... continue... to the Preferences screen, where you can change various settings for your account:
    User Preferences
  8. You should enter your name in the first box next to "Real Name:". Replace the words "Your Name" with ... your name. You do not need to change anything else on this screen, although you may if you wish and understand what you're doing.
  9. Now click the "Save" button at the bottom of the Preferences window. You will be taken to the main mail screen, showing the contents of your Inbox:
    Inbox
  10. In the Inbox example shown above, there is one message waiting. To read it, you would click on the Subject line ("School closing early next year"). Here is the function of the other icons:
    New write a new message
    Refresh refresh the list
    Prefs change preferences
    Addresses address book
    Edit folder edit folders
    Trash trash
    Log out log out
The Add address icon next to the message sender's name allows you to add the sender's name and address to your address book.
  11. If you open a message (by clicking on its subject in the message list), you will see something like this:
    Open message
  12. After reading the message, you can check do a number of things:
To delete it, verify that the pop-up in the right corner says "neomail-trash" as shown above, and click the "Move" button to move the message to the trash.
To go to the next or previous message, click on the arrow keys in the center of the tool bar.
Here is the meaning of the icons to the left of the tool bar:

    Reply reply to the sender
Reply to all reply to all (for mailing list responses)
