Log into computer #4 by typing in "Scan" for the name and "Scan" for the password. You need to use this special account for the scanner to work properly.
| 1. Open Readiris in the "Items for..." folder on the desktop. When the picture shown here appears, click once on it to make it disappear. | ![]() |
| 2. Click once on the scanner icon (2nd button, circled here) in the Readiris tool bar. | ![]() |
| 3. HP PrecisionScan will open up. Choose "Black & White" from the Output Type menu: | ![]() |
| 4. Select "Scan to Readiris 6.0 for HP" from the Scan menu: | ![]() |
| 5. When the scan is complete, Readiris will reactivate. It will probably be set to automatically recognize the text on the page, but you can use the layout menu shown here to unselect that option and draw your own zones if you want to. Otherwise, proceed to the next step. | ![]() |
| 6. Click the second-last button in the Readiris toolbar: | ![]() |
| 7. This dialogue box allows you to configure how your text will be saved. Set the options as shown if you are not sure you want something else. Then click "OK." | ![]() |
| 8. This box will interview you about all the uncertain characters it finds in the scan. It's best to just click "Finish." | ![]() |
| 9. You will be prompted to save the text now. Type a name for the file in the "Name:" box. Now double-click the "Local f" icon in the file list to open the Local f folder, which is where you will save your file. | ![]() |
| 10. Click the save button to save your file. | ![]() |
| 11. If you have other pages to scan (or other portions of the same page), repeat the steps above. | |
| 12. When you are done scanning, choose File:Quit and then log out. You now need to log back in, this time using your own account name and password. | |
13. Open the Macintosh HD and then the Local f folder. Drag the file (or files) you saved in the above steps from the Local f folder to your documents folder. This will copy the files to your documents folder.![]() |

| 14. Now drag the files from the Local f folder to the Trash and select "Special:Empty Trash" from the menu bar. If you neglect this step, anyone who logs into this computer will have access to these files. | |
| 15. You can now use your scanned text from any of the networked computers. Just run your word processor (Appleworks, Microsoft Word) and choose "File:Open" from the menu bar and select the file form the list. You can copy and paste it into any other document. | |
