Logging In and Out
When you log in to a school computer, the computer sets itself up for your use, presenting you with your customized "environment." It also connects you to the school file servers, so that you can access your private space and various schoolwide public areas.
When you leave the computer, it is important that you log out. If you do not, there are two negative results:
- your private files are presented to whoever sits down next at the computer, and she has full access to destroy them, etc.
- the next user of the computer will not be able to access her files unless she logs you out and then logs in as herself
So, both security and courtesy require you to log out of a computer when you leave it. Here is how to do it:
To log out on the Macintosh computers, click the blue Apple icon in upper left corner of the screen, and select "Log out ..." |
To log out of Windows computers, click "Start," then "Log off," or "Shut Down" and then "Log off." |
