Spirit Day—October 21,2004—marked the official beginning of Founders' Day celebrations honoring Western's 160th year.
Due to inclement weather, ceremonies planned for the Lumsden-Scott Stadium had to be moved indoors, but Western enthusiasm, pride, and tradition flowed throughout the auditorium.
Maryland State Delegate Jill Carter, a Western alumna, addressed the school, and students hung posters with the names of other prominent Western graduates, including Henrietta Szold, Sarah Tilghman Hughes, Maria Broome, Anna Deavere Smith, and Clara and Etta Cone.
Performances by the Band and the Pep Squad, as well as cheers led by the SGA, sparked bursts of enthusiasm from the student body.
Members and alumnae of the Track Team, having earlier relayed to each of Western's former sites to lay flowers and light candles, entered the auditorium to ringing applause and passed the torch to principal Landa McLaurin ('68).
Following Western tradition, the pep rally ended with a spirited singing of "Dear Western" to accompaniment provided by the Band.
