The average SAT scores for Western's Class of 2005 were higher than those of last year's graduating class. The gains are important, especially in a year when the state average SAT scores remained flat and the BCPSS average declined. At Western, every senior takes the SAT; this is not true at most BCPSS and other Maryland public schools. Western's 195 seniors constituted 8% of the total number of BCPSS students who took the SAT last year (2,460).
Western achieved a small rise in the average Verbal score, reversing its trend.

A 5-point rise in the average Math score represents a significant gain by Western students. Note that SAT scores of females, especially in Math, have always been lower than those of males. While reasons for this discrepancy are still unclear, the difference is typically 20 points in the SAT math score.
