Seven Western students of Russian earned medals in the 25th Annual National Russian Essay Contest. In the contest, supported by the American Council of Teachers of Russian, students write an essay in Russian on the theme announced at the beginning of the two-hour contest period. Students from across the U.S. participate, and essays are judged by language specialists and instructors of Russian from a variety of schools.
At the Intermediate level, Western's Ashley Hill and Jessica Johnson earned Bronze Medals for their essays. Jalisa Sykes and Melissa Harrington were awarded Silver Medals at the Beginner level. Neikita Jackson, Joy Neal, and Kobryn Taylor earned Bronze Medals at the Beginner level.
Congratulations to these girls and to their Russian teacher, James Sweigert!
