- Uniforms may be ordered on July 9th and 12th from 2:00-6:00 p.m. at Western. See also the Superkids site.
- Placement tests for incoming ninth graders will be given on Monday, June 4, 8:30-10:30 a.m. Make-up testing will be on Tuesday, June 12, 8:30-10:30 a.m.
- HSA Testing and Senior Exams take place the week of May 21-25.
- Lyric Gleason, '08, received a highly competitive internship with the Summer Coalition of the Arts at MICA. Lyric will intern with MICA graduate students co-teaching art history to a group of middle school students. Additionally, she will assist at Art Scape this summer.
- Seven Western students of Russian participated in the Maryland Olympiada of Spoken Russian. Melissa Harrington ('09) received a Silver Medal award in the Level II competition.
- Works by several Western students will be featured in the BCPSS Citywide Art Exhibit 2007 at the Baltimore Museum of Art, from May 16-20.
- David Hildebrand, Social Studies teacher, received a Gilder-Lehrman Institute fellowship for "Freedom and Slavery in the Atlantic World, 1500-1800" with Phillip Morgan at Johns Hopkins University this summer.
- Seniors Jalisa Sykes, Maryann Wellington, and Carla Wheaden received awards for academic achievement and leadership from the Baltimore Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at its annual Honors Day Celebration.
- English teacher Denise Dafeamekpor was selected to participate in a National Endowment for the Humanities seminar entitled "Writing Africa: Comparative African and Western 'Palavers' and Perspectives."
- Social Studies teachers Dara Adlyett and David Hildebrand received academic scholarships, including stipdends, to attend the College Board Advanced Placement Summer Institute for Teachers this summer.
- Read the letter to parents from Principal Matthews regarding parent conferences, uniforms, and the High School Assessments.
- Seven Western students of Russian earned medals in the National Russian Essay Contest.
- Sign up for our 4th annual Eva Scott Scholarship Golf Tournament, to be held on Saturday, September, 22, 2007!
- An All Years Reunion will be held on March 10, 2007 at Martin's West.
- Russian teacher James Sweigert was named 2006 recipient of the award for Excellence in Teaching at the Secondary Level by the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages.
- Western mourns the passing of beloved alumna and long-time school secretary Suzanne Held (Class of '64) on January 4, 2007.
- Report cards will be issued to students on Wednesday, Jan. 24. In addition to the parent conferences scheduled for Friday, Jan. 26 (1-3 p.m.), parent conferences will also be held on Thursday, Jan. 25 from 5-7 p.m.
- Suzanne Winemiller and Monique Butler were named Sun "Coaches of the Year" for girls' soccer and volleyball.
- Senior Kacie Ruark was named to the Sun's First All-City Girls' Soccer Team. Seniors Shatera Kimbrough and Brooke Wilson were named to the First All-City Girls' Volleyball Team.
- A front-page article in the December 9-15 issue of The Baltimore Afro-American features sophomore Kelley Mason, focusing on her community service and involvement in the Students Sharing Coalition.
- Western's "It's Academic" team defeated Liberty and Old Mill on December 9, and moves on to the semi-finals.
- Congratulations to senior Kristina Handy on her selection as a member of the Maryland All-State Women's Choir. She will be the only representative of Baltimore City in the choir.
- Progress Reports will be issued to students on December 15.
- Fall Athletics: Western's Varsity Volleyball won the city championship (3rd consecutive and 16th in last 19 years). The Varsity Soccer team also won the city championship (4th consecutive and 10th in the last 13 years). In Cross Country, Western's Varsity team came in second in the city, with senior Brittany Everett qualifying for the state Championships.
- This fall, Western fielded a girls junior varsity soccer team, the first in BCPSS history. 18 girls played an independent schedule against private schools. This new team reflects the strong interest in Western's athletic program.
- Report cards will be issued to students on November 15; parent-teacher conferences will be held on Friday, November 17, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
- Open House: we invite interested 7th and 8th graders and their parents/guardians to Open House on October 15 (3-5 p.m.) and November 2 (6-8 p.m.) to explore Western and meet students and staff.
- Western students' HSA scores place Western among the top state schools, with Algebra passing rates jumping to 83.1% (a 33.1% gain) and Biology to 84.7% (a 28.4% gain). View more details.
- Western teachers were issued laptop computers recently as part of a BCPSS initiative to boost the integration of computing technology into classroom instruction.
- Parents are encouraged to attend Back-to-School Night on Thursday, September 14, 5:00-7:00 p.m.
- Welcome to new staff members Millicent Boone (Paraprofessional), Ramona Browne (English), Kelly Caswell (Assistant Principal), Elizabeth Cullen (Spanish), Stephanie Farmer (Assistant Principal), Brian Garrity (English), Stephanie Novak (English), and Paulette Walton (Office Assistant).
- School begins on Monday, August 28 for all students. Welcome to returning students and to the Class of 2010!
- Dress Code notice: Western will not have uniforms for the 2006-07 school year. Our school, however, is a place of business. Students are required to dress appropriately, adhering to the BCPSS dress code.
- The Required Summer Reading list, charts, and literature concepts guide are posted on the English Department page.
- Sign up for our 3rd annual Eva Scott Scholarship Golf Tournament on Saturday, September, 16, 2006!
- Western bids farewell to veteran staff Suzanne Held, Marva Thomas and Elizabeth Walsh, retiring, and to Janice Nelson, leaving for another position in BCPSS.
- Landa McLaurin, principal since 1998, leaves Western as of July. BCPSS has announced a search for her replacement and appointed Eleanor Matthews as Managing Assistant Principal for the interrim.
