Landa McLaurin, principal since 1998, leaves Western as of July. BCPSS has announced a search for her replacement and appointed Eleanor Matthews as Managing Assistant Principal for the interrim.
Ms. McLaurin has taken a position with the nationwide nonprofit New Leaders for New Schools. In her new role, she will recruit, train, and coach aspiring principals and assistant principals for urban schools. Western thanks her for her staunch advocacy and leadership over eight years and wishes her all the best in her new career.
A 34-year veteran of the Baltimore City Public School System, Ms. McLaurin is a 1968 graduate of Western High School. Before returning to her alma mater, she served as assistant principal at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and at Southwestern High School, as mathematics department head at Lemmel Middle School and Southwestern High, and as mathematics teacher at Garrison Middle School. She has also taught at Baltimore City Community College in the role of adjunct professor.
Ms. McLaurin is an active member of the Baltimore community, participating in numerous organizations, including: Basileus, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Alpha Alpha Sigma Chapter; the Coalition of 100 Black Women; Maryland State Department of Education Fine Arts Advisory Board; and the Baltimore City Fine Arts Advisory Board, and Maryland Women for Responsive Government.
