After reading a Sun article about Western last fall, Mr. Charles Wasche contacted us to inform us of his desire to donate two historic documents to Western's Archives. On February 8, Mr. Wasche traveled from his home in Rock Hall to Western and presented these documents, which belonged to his grandmother Elsa M. Lucas, an 1898 graduate of Western. The first, her Western diploma, bears the signatures of each faculty member and the principal. Bordering the diploma are engravings of notable women such as Martha Washington and Hannah More, of the former Western building on Fayette Street, and of symbols of the liberal arts such as a globe, harp, and painter's easel. |
