Clubs and Organizations

Club Purpose
Band To provide music at Western assemblies and in the community; to study various types of music and performance; to enhance the cultural background of students; to provide physical exercise (marching band); to provide necessary skills which may lead to college scholarships.
Campus Crier To provide an independent student forum and to inform and entertain its subscribers. The newspaper is produced by students of all grade levels and curricular. The paper is published quarterly. The staff is open to the entire student body.
Chinese Heritage Club To provide opportunities for Chinese students to plan social and educational activities.
Concert Choir and Sounds Unlimited To study and perform the best choral literature.
Debate Team Western High School's Debate team competes in the Baltimore Urban Debate League. With one of the largest and strongest teams in the league, Western debaters achieve competitive success through logic, passion and credibility. The team researches, writes and debates multiple arguments for affirmative and negative cases. Debate is an excellent opportunity for growth in writing, public speaking and critical thinking.
Drama Club/Theater Arts To actively support the dramatic arts. Within the organization students train in the arts of mime, dramatic reading and acting. They present their own productions throughout the school year.
Environmental Club To increase environmental awareness and provide students with hands-on outdoor activities.
Fashionettes To provide scholarship money to graduating seniors; to build character and a higher sense of self-esteem.
Future Educators Association To prepare students for future careers in the education profession; to create a pipeline of teacher candidates to address the persistent teacher shortage.
GSA The GSA is dedicated to reducing anti-gay bigotry and raising awareness of the issues gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people face both within Western and in the larger community.
It's Academic To train students in listening skills and rapid response questions; to prepare a team to represent the school on the TV show.
Modern Dance Troupe To combine technical elements of modern, ballet and jazz dance. Students work to develop an understanding of compositional form. Emphasis is placed on interrelating dance technique, music, drama, and art for choreographic interpretation. Auditions are required.
National Art Honor Society To recognize and encourage students who have shown outstanding ability in art.
National Honor Society To bring recognition to outstanding students; to increase enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership and to develop character in students.
Robotics To provide enrichment activities that will serve to prepare students for the rigor of college study in engineering and other math-based fields.
Spanish Club To provide Spanish students with an informal setting where they will learn about the culture, music, movies, food, and dance of Spanish-speaking countries.
Sisters for Black Awareness To promote awareness about heritage and unity; to increase self-esteem.
Stage Crew To set the stage for assemblies and other auditorium programs; to further the interests and skills of members in lighting, sound, and set construction.
Stock Market Club To provide students the opportunity to learn about the stock market through a simulation
Student Government Association To serve the students of Western High School. The SGA provides activities for the students and community. It also serves as the liason for the student body to the administration.
Teacher Academy of Maryland Club Open only to students enrolled in Western's Teacher Academy Program.
